The City of Detroit has a long history of economic challenges and the even the state of Michigan is on the verge of going bankrupt. The ones thriving Motor City and the Home of Motown Records was long ago and another big issue Detroit is dealing with is the city is to broke to bury their dead.
Shanti Das, a former music executive for Universal Motown Records, was touched by this problem even though she is not from Detroit because at only 8 months old, her own father committed suicide and her mother was struggling to pay for the burial. Das was able to raise funds to drop the number of unburried from 67 to 52.
Das started a non-profit organization called "May We Rest In Peace" which only objective is to bury the unclaimed bodies. She was able to raise $6000 for her non-profit in just a few weeks through her relationships within the music industry.
